Reiki is a gentle form of energy balancing. The Japanese word Reiki
(pronounced "ray-key") means universal life force. This energy,
which permeates all living things, sometimes becomes unbalanced,
depleted or blocked through interference such as illness, injury,
stress, grief or exhaustion. The practice of Reiki helps restore
physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.
During a Reiki session the practitioner lightly places hands on or
slightly above the client's clothed body. Reiki energy flows through
the practitioner to the recipient's areas of need. Clients experience
one of more of the following:
- Warmth, coolness or tingling
- Stress reduction
- Deep relaxation
- Improved blood pressure level
- Relief from pain
- Improved sleep
- Improved energy level
- Mental clarity or insight
- Improved emotional regulation
In addition to Reiki sessions with a practitioner, Reiki self-treatments
are a wonderful resource for many people. I encourage clients to
learn self-healing and, at clients' request, can include instruction in
self-healing as part of Reiki sessions.
How does Reiki facilitate healing?
Healing is an internal process that the body will accomplish on its
own given the right environment. Here are ways that Reiki works:
- Facilitates deep relaxation Reiki sessions are quiet and still. They can serve as an oasis in the midst of overly busy lives. Clients often find that they experience improved sleep after a session. Deep relaxation and good quality sleep are a natural and necessary component of healing.
- Complements other forms of treatment
Reiki can be very effective in combination with other
modalities such as traditional western medicine,
acupuncture, psychotherapy, etc. Reiki helps clients
facilitate their healing process in an integrative way.
- Body, mind and spirit work together
As the practitioner uses various reiki hand positions, the client's
physical body serves as the starting point for healing of mind,
spirit, and emotions. Thoughts become intentional about
healing, balance, and healthy lifestyle. Emotional balance is
encouraged and supported. The spirit is an active participant
in the healing process.
- Reiki draws on spiritual energy, which is present in all living
things The energy, active through the practitioner's hands is
directed to the client and used for the highest good of the
client's needs.
- Past, present and future healing
Reiki energy can be thought of as a "quantum physics of
healing". The healing energy is not limited by time or
space.
- Practitioner support
The reiki practitioner supports the client along his/her
healing journey.
